This simulation study shows that nitrogen fertilisation rate and crop traits strongly influence crop–weed competition. Lower nitrogen increases weed impact and reduces crop yield, while selecting crop traits such as efficient nitrogen uptake and lower nitrogen demand can improve yield and suppress weeds, supporting more sustainable, low-input farming systems.
